Reviews & method

How a product earns a slot.

We are not a review lab and we do not pretend to be. Here is exactly what we check, what we cannot check, and what our verdicts mean.

The method

Five checks, every pick, every time.

  • Does it solve a real student problem? If it is a novelty, it does not make the list, no matter how well it converts.
  • What do real buyers say?We read the one- and three-star reviews, not the five-star ones. Repeat complaints are disqualifying.
  • Is the price fair against alternatives? We compare at least three competing listings and note where the cheap option is genuinely fine.
  • Does it actually ship?Delivery gets checked against US and South African addresses, including duties at checkout.
  • Would we hand it to a younger sibling? The last check, and the one that cuts the most products.

What we do not claim

We do not lab-test, teardown, or measure. Most picks are assessed from specification sheets, partner catalogues, buyer reviews, and hands-on use where we happen to own the item. When we have not handled something ourselves, the pick reflects research, not a bench test.

What changes a verdict

Price creep, a quality drop after a supplier change, shipping problems, or a wave of new complaints. When any of those show up, the pick gets swapped and the change is noted in the Friday email.

Editor verdicts

Six current calls, in plain words.

Ratings and review counts shown on product cards come from the retailer, not from us. Our verdict is the sentence underneath.

Reader mail

What we ask readers for.

We do not publish testimonials we cannot verify, so this page will not show you a wall of five-star quotes. What we do publish is reader-reported problems: if three people tell us a pick arrived damaged or ran two sizes small, that goes into the edit as a note, and the pick often gets replaced.

If a pick let you down, tell us. Send a note with the product and what happened — that feedback is the most useful thing we receive.

Students comparing notes and gear at a shared table

Verdict changes go out on Friday.

When a pick gets swapped, the email says which one and why. That is most of what the list is for.
