The 20-item dorm move-in checklist

Start with the bed. Everything else is negotiable.

Residence-hall mattresses are Twin XL almost everywhere in the United States, and standard twin sheets will not reach the corners. Buying the bundle — sheet set, comforter, two pillowcases — costs less than assembling the same three items separately, and it means one box instead of three deliveries chasing you across a move-in weekend.

After bedding, the room is really a storage problem. Halls are sized for one person and furnished for none, so the wins come from going vertical: risers under the bed, bins under the risers, and a single power hub instead of six wall bricks fighting over two outlets.

The twenty items, in buying order

1. Twin XL sheet set, comforter, and two pillowcases
2. Mattress topper — the single biggest sleep upgrade in a hall
3. Two pillows: one for sleeping, one for sitting up to read
4. Bed risers, ideally with a built-in outlet and USB ports
5. Two under-bed storage bins that clear the riser height
6. Six collapsible fabric cubes for the closet and cubbies
7. Over-door shower caddy, vented so it drains
8. Quick-dry towel set — two bath, two hand
9. Shower shoes, non-negotiable in a shared bathroom
10. Surge-protected power hub with at least one USB-C port
11. Desk lamp with a warm bulb, because hall lighting is brutal
12. Clip fan — September and May are hotter than you think
13. Command hooks and strips, deposit-safe
14. Single-serve coffee maker, under twelve inches tall
15. Two mugs, two glasses, one plate, one bowl, one set of cutlery
16. Laundry hamper that carries and a month of detergent pods
17. Basic tool kit: screwdriver, tape measure, scissors
18. First-aid basics and any prescription refills sorted before the term
19. Door mirror and a small trash bin
20. A lockable drawer box for documents, cards, and keys

That is the whole list. If your budget stops at item ten, you still have a functioning room — everything after that is comfort, and comfort can wait until the first paycheque or the first care package.

The six things people over-buy

• A printer. Campus printing is cheaper than ink, every time.
• A full 15-piece knife block. Halls usually ban blades over a set length anyway.
• Four-plus towels. They pile up wet and nothing dries.
• Decorative throw pillows. They end up on the floor by week two.
• A second monitor, before seeing the desk. Measure first, buy in October.
• Bulk snacks. Buy locally once you know what the nearest shop stocks.

Read the hall rules before the sale ends

Almost every residence hall publishes a prohibited-items list: open-coil appliances, halogen lamps, extension cords without surge protection, candles, pets. Kettles and single-serve brewers are usually fine. Ten minutes on that page saves a confiscated appliance and a fine.

One more thing: check whether your hall does a mid-year room swap. If it does, buy storage that stacks and folds flat, and skip anything that only fits one specific room layout.
